When Your Friend Is Nice to Everyone Except You
She laughs at everyone's jokes. Just not yours. Here is how to figure out what is going on, without deciding the worst.
If this sounds familiar, first things first: that feeling is real. Being treated differently by someone you care about hurts, even when you cannot point to one single thing they did wrong. Actually, it can hurt more when you cannot point to it, because there is nothing to explain to anyone.
What might be going on
Here is the tricky part. When someone is suddenly cold, our brains love to fill in the blank with the worst possible answer. "She hates me." "I did something terrible." "Everyone is talking about me."
Sometimes something did happen. But often it is one of these:
- Something small got big in her head. Maybe you said something that landed weird and you have no idea. She might be waiting for you to notice.
- She is trying out a new group. People shift around a lot right now. Being extra nice to new people can be her way of fitting in, not a message about you.
- Something is going on with her. Stress at home, a fight with someone else, a bad week. Some people get quieter with the friends they feel safest with.
- The friendship is changing. This one is hard. Sometimes two people just start drifting. It does not make either of you a bad person.
Cold is not always cruel. But you are still allowed to want to know.
Things you could try
You do not have to do all of these. Pick the one that feels most like you.
- Check the facts. Is it every day, or was it one bad Tuesday? Sometimes writing down what actually happened helps you see it more clearly.
- Ask, simply. Not in front of everyone, and not over text if you can help it. Something like: "Hey, I feel like things have been weird with us. Did I do something?" That is it. No speech needed.
- Listen to the answer. If she tells you something you did, you can say sorry without agreeing that you are a terrible person. Both things can be true: you made a mistake and you are still a good friend.
- Widen your circle a little. Not to replace her. Just so one person is not holding your whole day in their hands.
And if you ask and she says "nothing, I'm fine," but it keeps happening? That is information too. You cannot make someone treat you the way you want. You can decide how much of your energy goes into waiting for them to.
A note on labels
It is tempting to call someone "toxic" or a "fake friend" when they hurt you. Sometimes a friendship really is not good for you, and it is okay to step back from it. But most people are not villains. They are figuring it out too, often badly. You can protect your feelings without needing to turn someone into the bad guy.
Maya, by the way, did ask. Jordan said she thought Maya had been laughing at her in the group chat. Maya had not been. It took one awkward five-minute talk to clear up something that had been sitting there for two weeks.
Not every story ends that neatly. But a lot more of them do than you would think.
